Forsooth! The Utah Midsummer Renaissance Faire Is Here!
Back in medieval times, vendors would come into town along with their families, bringing their wares in wooden carts. While in town, they would set up and sleep in temporary shelters, where they and their families ate, slept and played. During lulls in sales activity, the vendors would work on their crafts.
These festival days were joyful days of a community gathering, one of the social events of the year, and several days of bartering and bargains. It was the medieval version of Prime Days and Mardi Gras.
Well, those medieval festival days are happening again in Cedar City with the annual Utah Midsummer Renaissance Faire. The faire runs from Wednesday, July 17th through Saturday, July 20th.
The faire is renowned for its vibrant entertainment, featuring jousting tournaments, live music, comedy acts, and theatrical performances. Wandering minstrels, jesters, and magicians enhance the festive atmosphere, captivating audiences with their talents. The marketplace is a bustling hub of activity, with vendors offering handmade crafts, jewelry, clothing, and weaponry. Traditional artisans demonstrate skills like blacksmithing, pottery, and weaving, providing a fascinating glimpse into medieval trades.
Food and drink are a major highlight of the event, with stalls serving an array of traditional Renaissance fare such as turkey legs, meat pies, and freshly baked bread. Modern food options are also available to cater to diverse tastes. Adults can enjoy beverages like mead and ale, while children can choose from a variety of non-alcoholic drinks.
Costumes play a significant role in the faire’s atmosphere, with attendees encouraged to don period-appropriate attire. Costume contests for both adults and children add to the fun, and the colorful outfits contribute to the event’s authenticity. The faire is particularly family-friendly, offering numerous activities for children. Puppet shows, interactive storytelling, games, and crafts ensure young visitors are entertained, while knight training sessions provide an engaging way for them to learn about medieval history.
Educational workshops and demonstrations are also a key feature, covering topics such as historical reenactments, dance lessons, and historical cooking methods. These sessions offer a deeper understanding of the Renaissance period, enhancing the overall experience.
Keep in mind this festival happens under the midsummer sun so take precaution as you wander around the Main Street Park. Make sure to stay hydrated (plenty of drink options), wear light and breathable clothing, hats and sunscreen would also be recommended.
