Empowering High School Girls In Cybersecurity: SUU’s OutreachMAD Project
Dr. Shalini Kesar, director of Southern Utah University’s Master of Science in Cybersecurity with Information Assurance program, has been awarded a $674,018 grant to fund the Outreach Motivation Awareness Dedication (OutreachMAD) project. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in access and participation for high school girls in cybersecurity education, particularly in rural and underserved areas of southern Utah.
The grant, awarded through the Talent Ready Connection Initiative, underscores SUU’s dedication to providing equitable educational opportunities. “This achievement is a direct result of Dr. Shalini Kesar’s remarkable 16-year dedication to this cause,” said Jimmy McDonough, Assistant Commissioner of Education Workforce Programs, in a press release. “Through this grant, rural high school students will gain valuable exposure to cybersecurity and technology education, empowering them with skills and opportunities to succeed in high-demand fields.”
Over the next three years, the project will foster collaboration between SUU students, educators, K-16 communities, and industry leaders to create inclusive cybersecurity outreach activities. Planned initiatives include hands-on workshops, webinars, technology certification programs, and a one-day conference. Additionally, students will have opportunities to connect with industry professionals who will serve as role models and mentors.
“Students will have access to hands-on activities and opportunities to network with industry members,” said Dr. Kesar. “This will allow them to build their confidence, enhance skill sets, and prepare for an education and/or career in cybersecurity and technology.”
This grant also supports work-based learning programs, including apprenticeships and scholarships, to align education with workforce needs in high-demand industries.
The SUU Computer Science and Cybersecurity faculty, supported by the SPARC Office, remain committed to delivering high-quality education and fostering partnerships between academia and industry to address workforce demands.
