A group of students from Launch High School in Cedar City is making a bold impact with their new nonprofit organization, Teen X. Founded as a class project, Teen X has grown into a student-led initiative aimed at boosting confidence and social skills among local teens. Recently granted nonprofit status, the group is organizing its first major fundraiser: a 5K event called the “Space Race,” scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Veterans Park in Cedar City.

In a recent appearance on KSUB's Big Picture Morning Show, Teen X members Kayson Wood, Josh Jones, Ari Schrimshaw, and Cali Coans shared their mission and the inspiration behind the project.

“We are Teen X, a nonprofit organization created by Launch students with the mission to create a culture of confidence in teens,” said Josh Jones during the interview.

Students Helping Students

The Space Race aims to raise money for educational resources and hygiene kits for teens in need—particularly local students experiencing homelessness. “There’s currently about 375 homeless students in Iron County,” Jones explained. “That’s a 33% increase from last year.”

Cali Coans emphasized the accessible nature of the event. “It’s going to be a 5K. You can go at your own pace… there will be some prizes, but the main goal is to support our community.”

Participants can register at SpaceRace2025eventbrite.com for $20 for adults and $15 for children. In addition to race entries, the group is seeking support from local businesses to help fund their cause.

Reflecting on his own growth through the project, Kayson Wood said, “Ever since I joined Teen X, all my social levels have gone up… I just feel a lot more confident talking to people.”

The Space Race begins at 9 a.m. on May 3. Organizers hope the event will not only raise funds but also raise awareness of the challenges many local teens quietly face.
