Diehard is used to describe someone who “continues to support something in spite of opposition” per Google's definition.

It’s a term largely used to label certain parts of a fanbase in the world of sports, referring to those fans who are passionate and loyal through the thick and thin.

It’s clearly possible a massive group of people are all fans of a certain team, but you know for a fact that it doesn’t mean that every fan is a “diehard.”

See, when it comes to supporting your favorite squad, the unwritten rule is there are two types of fans.

The aforementioned “diehard” who has followed the team through the depths of hell, who knows the history, the stats and the players mother’s maiden names off memory.

And then the casual, more fair weather fan, who might wear the hats or throw a sticker on their vehicle but is more or less invested based on the success of the team.

If it’s a good year, it’s a good time to pay more attention to the team, but if it’s a bad year the “casual” fan will likely prioritize things such as family time or individual growth rather than worrying constantly about the state of the team.

Lame, right?

A diehard fan is a title with great significance to those who deem themselves as such, meaning they don’t take posers lightly.

If you call yourself a diehard, be ready to be tested by other fans who call themselves diehards.

It’s like some code where fans of the same franchise have to sniff each other out before they can decide if their fellow fan’s opinion has any validity.

When two self proclaimed diehards meet, one can expect them to stage questions like “who was the greatest player of all time?”

“What did you think of the title game in 1996?”

“Who’s your favorite backup center of all time?”

“How many jersey’s do you own?”

You know, stuff of that nature.

Diehard Fans Separated By Utah's Jordan Love

Recently Green Bay Packers fans had a chance to separate the casuals and diehards when a content creator named Joe Bonham interviewed members of Pack nation during the 2025 NFL Draft festivities.

Bonham used a question that most diehards will use when separating the wheat from the chaff by asking fans where a player of their favorite team played collegiate ball.

It’s a simple but effective question with differing levels of potency.

You can lob a softball for them by asking about their star player’s college or you can up the heat by asking about the third string wide receiver and where he attended school.

Bonham went with the softball approach, asking Packer fans first if they were diehards or bandwagon fans.

And second, to prove it by answering where Jordan Love, the starting star quarterback, went to school.

This seemed like a gimme right?

All I have to do to prove my loyalty is say “Utah State”!

A starting quarterbacks college career is well documented regardless of school size or accolades.

Most casual fans could likely tell you Patrick Mahomes went to Texas Tech or Josh Allen played for Wyoming, it’s free knowledge to anyone who watches a broadcast announce starting lineups.

Yet, a handful of Packers “diehards” didn’t seem to know that Love was setting record in Logan, Utah during his college career.

Some acted like it was on the tip of their tongue before succumbing to reality that they didn’t know, some admitted it was embarrassing they didn’t know.

One, even took a shot at the fans of their NFC north rival in the Minnesota Vikings claiming he was a “diehard, unlike Vikings fans” before saying “I don’t know” when asked about Love’s collegiate team.

1 point for Vikings fans.

My favorite responses are when someone blurted out the wrong college with absurd confidence, as answers such as “UCLA” and “Nevada” were attempted.

Half a point for a Mountain West team right?

Now of course, this video is barely longer than a minute, thus the sample size of people appearing who didn’t know, compared to those who did is likely rather small.

Most of the people who knew immediately, the real diehards, likely didn’t make the reel, but Bonham gave credit where it was due and included a handful of fans who knew without hesitation that Jordan Love was a Utah State Aggie.

One lucky fan was even gifted a pair of tickets for how diehard he was, like how he refused to let his wife drink out of a purple cup.

In this house, we only drink milk straight from the cow in a cup made of cheese.

That is the Packer way.

Let this be a lesson to you fans out there looking to become diehards.

Make sure you memorize, study and understand where your teams players went to college so when a man with a tiny microphone questions your fanhood, you can stand triumphantly.
