Forget picket fences and pitched roofs—today’s western dream home looks more like a geometry teacher’s fever dream. From Salt Lake to Las Vegas, a new architectural aesthetic is sweeping the region: bold square silhouettes, floor-to-ceiling windows, and interiors so minimal they make Marie Kondo look like a hoarder. It’s not just a style—it’s a statement. And depending on who you ask, it’s either the future of design or a glorified concrete shoebox.

Desert Color in St. George

To accentuate my awareness of this trend we had a stay at the Desert Color in St. George with my wife's family. I was so impressed with the 3 story modern style and architecture digest style furnishings it made my inner artist glow. Here my feelings from our stay in this glorious new trend–yes, I am a fan.

The Shape of Things to Come

Boxy is the new cozy: Clean lines and rectangular footprints dominate. Flat roofs offer opportunities for patios on each level, the top featuring a cozy outdoor theater with a hot tub. Come on. This home displays geometric bravado, flaunting symmetry and sharp angles like it was auditioning for a Bauhaus reboot.

Let There Be Light (and Windows)

I have noticed that this architecture celebrate glass like gospel. Look for oversized windows that erase the boundary between indoors and out. With this love of glass privacy is optional. Some homes look like they were built for exhibitionists. I mean the individual gatherings in homes around us were presented en masse like a Jan Steen exhibit.

Beloved by Some, Bewildering to Others

This trend is not for everyone, some in our party argue that it’s soulless, sterile, or just another way to flaunt wealth under the guise of simplicity. Traditionalists might note we are trading out cowboy boots for concrete, but whether you see it as a minimalist utopia or a boxy invasion, one thing’s clear: the West is getting a makeover, one square foot at a time.
