Stop All That Barking

If you have a neighbor whose dog barks at all hours of the day or night, should you get one of those electric dog barking devices? They are supposed to send out a high-pitched sound when it senses barking. It isn’t supposed to hurt the dogs, just train them not to bark as much.

There are many people who have tested these devices and posted videos of their experience and the reviews are mixed. It seems like how good they work depends on why the dog is barking.

If it is barking out of habit, these devices can help lessen this behavior. If the dog’s mind is captured by something like another animal or someone who looks like an intruder, the dog will bark through the noise.

Are There Laws Against Dogs Barking?

In Utah there is a provision for dogs that bark incessantly day and night.

An animal control officer may cite the owner of a dog which is barking excessively and continuously for a period of ten (10) minutes or intermittently for one-half (1/2) hour or more to the disturbance of any person at any time of day or night. Provided, however, that animal shall not be in violation if a person or other animal is trespassing or threatening to trespass, or if the animal is teased or provoked.

My Own Test

I have a good dog who is calm and happy until the doorbell rings. Then a new dog appears that wants to destroy whatever happens to be on the other side of the door. I am going to put one of these devices in my entry and see if it helps.
